If you have taken the time to carefully grow out your beard, you want to make sure it looks its best. It can be tough going waiting for your beard to grow out fully, the itching and the patchiness are not enjoyable. So when it does finally grow out, you want to make the most of it. The two most important products at your disposal are beard oils and beard balms. Whilst both are great for your beard, they are slightly different. This article explains what the difference is between beard oil and beard balm, their benefits to your beard, and how to use them.

What are The Benefits of Using Beard Oil?

Beard oil is the product you will probably be using the most. It is the most important product for keeping your beard healthy. If you don't keep your beard and skin healthy, your pores will become blocked and new hair growth will be stunted. If you are looking for a way to make your beard look and feel more fuller, this is the solution for you should reach for.

Beard oil can also prevent itching, which is one of the most common complaints people have when growing their beards out. It is very soothing for the skin and can be a great help to prevent skin irritation. Apart from the fact that a less irritated beard is more likely to grow fuller, it is also much more comfortable. Having an itchy beard, scratching it, irritating the skin and making it even itchier is a vicious cycle. One beard oil can put an end to. So what is beard oil for? Well, the reason beard oil is so soothing is that it is typically made from carrier oils, namely: Castor Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil oil, and Argan Oil. They are called carrier oils because they help carry the oils into your skin, other oils cannot.

How Do You Apply Beard Oil?

To apply beard oil properly. you are going to want to use the dropper to add a few drops into your hand. Then rub your hands together and gently massage it into your beard. You want to stimulate the hair follicles as much as possible. So next, gently brush the oil through your beard with a beard brush. A boar bristle brush is the best choice, many people find. The reason being it is incredibly stiff-bristled and is perfect for exfoliating deep into the hair follicles. You want the oil to be as deep and evenly coated through your beard as possible, you especially want it to make it to the skin. So using such a brush is perfect.

It's not just comfort that the beard oil is aiming to achieve, it is going to make your beard look much more shiny and glossy. You want to be looking your best, so you need to be rocking a killer beard.

What is Beard Balm?

Beard balm is almost as important as beard oil. It works like hair conditioner and styling mousse, but for your beard, not your hair. Just like the conditioner should be used after the shampoo, beard balm should be used after beard oil.

Just like with the oil, scoop a small pea-size amount of balm into your hand and rub it around. Then gently massage it into your beard, specifically the wildest and most unruly sections of your beard. To make sure your whole beard looks the same, rub into your mustache too. Just like with the oil, you want to use a boar bristle brush to ensure even distribution and stimulate the hair follicles.

If you are looking for a way to style your beard or mustache, you are going to want to use balm, not oil. You can use it just the same as you would mousse for your hair. It is perfecting for styling and adding more volume.

How Does Beeswax Work As a Moisturizer?

The second reason balm is used after the oil, is it works as a protective layer. It keeps your beard safe from the elements. If you are looking for something to keep your beard from getting too weathered when spending time in the outdoors, or specifically in the water, the balm is your best bet. The reason it works so well is that balm is often soothing sweet oils, full of nutrients for your skin, blended with beeswax. Beeswax coats the surface of the hairs, and the skin, and doesn't allow water to permeate it. This is the same reason people have beeswax moisturizer; because it locks the moisture into the skin.

Beard Oil vs Balm: Why not use both for great results?

Keeping your beard looking full, glossy, and as healthy as possible will take a little work. Using either beard oil or balm first is great for you, but using them both is best. They play well off each other, the oils make a good base and the balm locks in all the moisture and oil. If you try using a combination of both every day you might start to see awesome results in just a week. If you keep at it, you will start to see noticeable progress. Everyone, and every beard, is different so it may take shorter or longer than the product estimates. Don't worry, you'll get there. Good luck with the new products, and good luck with your killer beard.
